Dawn of War IV’s Last Stand Is Back — And It Looks Absolutely Brutal

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV — Blood Ravens army advancing across a desert battlefield

Dawn of War IV is bringing back The Last Stand, and it is doing it properly. Sega and King Art Games have revealed a first look at the fan-favourite co-op mode in a new 30-minute Battlefield Report, and the footage shows a three-player horde survival mode that is bigger, deeper and more brutal than the version players remember from Dawn of War II.

Dawn of War IV launches on December 3, 2026, for PC via Steam, with the Commander Edition unlocking three days early on November 30. Players who pre-order can also save 10 percent. The Last Stand will be there at launch, and it is already shaping up to be one of the most talked-about parts of the game.

The Last Stand first appeared in Dawn of War II, where it became a cult favourite. Instead of base building and large armies, it put a single hero and their friends against wave after wave of enemies, with upgrades and wargear earned along the way. It was simple to understand and hard to master, and it kept players coming back long after the campaign was finished. Dawn of War IV is now rebuilding that idea for a new game, with more Commanders, more progression and more ways to play.

Dawn of War IV Last Stand: How It Works

In Dawn of War IV, The Last Stand is a three-player co-operative mode where players fight together against 20 waves of enemies. Each player controls a Commander, and each Commander can earn experience, level up to level 30, and unlock new wargear, weapons, abilities and upgrades as they survive.

At launch, Dawn of War IV will include five Commanders in The Last Stand, representing all four of the game’s playable factions, including the Blood Ravens and the Dark Angels. That choice matters, because each Commander plays differently, and a team that picks Commanders who complement each other will survive far longer than a team of three similar heroes.

Commanders can also call on up to four Companion units, which form their Strikeforce. Those units fight alongside the Commander, giving players more firepower and more tactical options as the waves get harder. As the mode progresses, players will need to think carefully about which upgrades to take, which abilities to unlock and when to spend resources, because the enemies do not get easier. They get stronger, faster and more numerous.

Why Dawn of War IV Last Stand Matters

The Last Stand is not a side mode in Dawn of War IV. It is one of the game’s three main ways to play, alongside the campaign and competitive multiplayer, and it is designed to be played again and again. Twenty waves is a long survival run, and the progression system, with levels up to 30 and permanent upgrades to earn, gives players a reason to return even after they have beaten it once.

It also shows how Dawn of War IV is trying to balance nostalgia with new ideas. The Last Stand is a direct callback to Dawn of War II, and long-time fans will recognise the structure immediately. At the same time, the new Commanders, the Strikeforce system and the deeper progression are all new, and they are built for a game that is much larger than Dawn of War II ever was.

That scale is clear from the rest of Dawn of War IV as well. The game features more than 70 missions across its campaign, with four playable factions, deep army customisation and a story that spans the Warhammer 40,000 universe. You can see more of that scale in our earlier coverage, Nine Minutes of War — Dawn of War IV’s Massive Game Overview Trailer Shows Off 70+ Missions, The Last Stand, and the Deepest Army Customization Ever, which breaks down the game overview trailer in detail.

Dawn of War IV: What Happens After Launch

Sega and King Art have also laid out what happens after Dawn of War IV launches on December 3, 2026, and it is good news for players who are worried about post-launch support. Additional Commanders will be added to The Last Stand as free DLC after launch, so the mode should keep growing rather than staying fixed at five Commanders.

Year One will also bring free updates, including the return of Crusade Mode, new maps, new modes, new Commanders and a Mission Editor. On top of that, there will be two major story expansions and a new playable faction. That is a substantial post-launch plan, and it suggests that Dawn of War IV is being treated as a long-term platform for Warhammer 40,000 strategy, not just a single launch.

For players who want to get in early, the Commander Edition unlocks on November 30, three days before the standard launch on December 3, 2026. Pre-ordering also gives a 10 percent discount on PC via Steam. The standard edition launches on December 3, 2026, with The Last Stand included at launch.

What to Watch in the Dawn of War IV Battlefield Report

The 30-minute Battlefield Report is the best way to see The Last Stand in action before launch. It shows the mode in full, with three Commanders fighting through waves, earning upgrades and calling in their Strikeforce units. It also gives a sense of how the mode feels in practice, from the pace of the waves to the way Commanders level up and change over the course of a run.

Watch for how the five launch Commanders play differently, and how the Blood Ravens and Dark Angels Commanders fit into the wider Dawn of War IV roster. The report also shows the scale of the later waves, where the screen fills with enemies and the team has to work together to survive. It is a useful preview for anyone trying to decide which Commander to play first, and for anyone who wants to see whether The Last Stand lives up to its reputation.

Dawn of War IV is also part of a strong period for real-time strategy games on PC. Sega and Relic recently announced a major free update for Company of Heroes 3, and you can read about its first single-player DLC in Company of Heroes 3: Operation Torch Announced — First Single-Player DLC Brings 15 Missions to North Africa on November 25. The Last Stand in Dawn of War IV is a different kind of co-op experience, but it comes from the same tradition of strategy games that reward teamwork, positioning and smart upgrades.

Sega announced the first look at The Last Stand today, November 5, 2026.
